Writers Should Write and Leave the Graphics to the Experts
I decided to write this brief post to express a point that may be hard for some writers to swallow (like it was hard for me). Basically what I wanted to say is in the title. If you’re a writer, stick to what you do best; write. Leave the graphics to the graphics experts. I say this, because as a self-published author of over a dozen little ebooks, I found myself learning to make cool little covers. I’m not a graphics person by trade, but I found myself enjoying working with text and manipulating graphics, to come up with some nice covers.
In 2014, when I published my first novel, I tried to get away with the same thing, but my son wasn’t having it. I had to listen to all his talk and lectures about pixels, creating source files, the issues with jpg versus using png file formats, and a whole bunch of other crap I didn’t care about. I finally let him do the image for “Experimenting with Murder” and it came out great. Last year in 2014 when I released my second novel: “Skipping Childhood”, I ran into the same situation, with the same result.
Now, just the other day, I had to contend with the following comments after I decided to “do my own cover” again. Here is what my son the perfectionist said and did. He made me take my cover down and insisted that it was too amateurish. “You’re a writer mom and a good one. So write and leave the cover alone.” So now he’s working on me a professional style cover (he’s really good at that kind of thing). I’m sure it will be awesome, but quite frankly, I liked the one I made. 🙁
