How to Stay Motivated as a New Self-published Amazon Author
Are you looking for a way to stay motivated as a new self-published author this year? If so, keep reading and you’ll find some useful tips below.
Before we get into our discussion about useful ways to stay motivated, let me extend an invitation to new self-published authors living in or near the Los Angeles area. Why not consider joining a new Los Angeles-based Meetup Group, specifically created for new Amazon self-published authors. If you’re a SERIOUS MINDED, self-published author with at least one title listed on Amazon, and you like the idea of a weekly Meetup, then please keep reading.
New Amazon Authors “Meetup Group”
A New Amazon Authors meetup group is now forming and it is currently FREE TO JOIN. As you can imagine, there are tons of great Meetup Groups that you can find listed online. The problem is, sometimes you can’t find one close enough to you, or one that is specifically tailored to your needs as an Amazon self-published author.
I’ve run into both these problems myself, even though technically, I’m not a new author, just undiscovered. In the past several years, I’ve self-published multiple titles via Amazon. My desire to REGULARLY interact IN PERSON with other Amazon authors is the reason this new group is forming in Los Angeles, where I reside.
The Wake Me When I’m Famous – Meetup Group is primarily for new self-published authors who want to benefit from the experience that existing Amazon authors can bring to the table. But this exchange is in no way one-sided. Coordinating and conducting this group is equally advantageous to me and other authors like myself who attend. Not only is it a great way to help stay motivated, but there are also things we can learn from one another.
Keep in mind that one of the biggest benefits to everyone who participates is being able to see an increase in your book sales and visibility. This is because of the entire group’s mutually beneficial book marketing and promotion efforts and activities.
No one knows better about the ups, downs, and inside-outs of being a new Amazon author than another Amazon author. Whether they are new, not so new, or they are longtime authors, you can benefit from networking with other Amazon self-published authors.
You can’t deny that it makes total sense to interact with those who can share and swap knowledge about publishing and book marketing issues, specific to Amazon. This is a great way to build a network of authors who ultimately end up helping one another in more ways than one. This can be true for you, regardless of what stage you are at in your career as an author. If you are serious about a weekly 3-hour commitment to your book and your career as an author, then don’t hesitate to join us.

Of course, there are lots of creative ways for authors to stay motivated and focused on productive book related activities. A few of them are cited at the bottom of this post. But without a doubt, nothing beats networking with other serious-minded authors who are just as determined about succeeding as you are.
Motivation and Author Support
Motivation and author support can be very helpful to new self-published authors, especially when you can actually network in person and meetup in the real world. Some of the topics you can look forward to being covered in an Amazon Meetup include:
- Why you should or shouldn’t use KDP Select
- Which online book marketing activities work best
- How to increase book sales even without book reviews
- How to use Amazon author tools like “X-ray” and “Look Inside”
4 Ways to Help Stay Motivated
Whether you decide to join a meetup or not, the following four ways can still help you stay motivated on your journey as a self-published author. These helpful tips work great for self-published authors. They help you stay motivated to continue sharpening your Amazon marketing skills.
1. Visual Validation – Surround yourself with positive talk
Inspirational and motivational quotes and affirmations need to be ingrained. The best way to benefit from them is to write them down, post them around, and recite them regularly. Notice the photo of my motivational wall. It contains inspirational quotes, affirmations, things I need to do, want to do, and things I have every intention of doing.
2. Treat yourself
Making sure to treat yourself weekly as a reward for all your hard efforts is a good way to stay motivated. An even better motivator is actually buying motivational products, especially those that are geared to the “writing life” or being an author. Buy all your writing related tools and supplies in your favorite and most motivational color. Mine is purple, as you can see from my new 2018 motivational journal book, and magic purple pen!
Even generic motivational sayings work well because they can always be applied to the life of an author, just like the words written on my “Wake Me When I’m Famous” shirt or on my journal book (above). In addition to the products you treat yourself to, you can always find the same kind of positive talk in online social media posts.
3. Show off your book(s)
No matter what type of book you have published and no matter how long or short the content is, SPEND the time, energy, and expense. Have a copy of your book printed on Amazon and mailed to you, even if you don’t plan on selling it in paperback format. You can even check into a local printer or other print-on-demand option; as long as you try and get a print copy of your Amazon book.
Trust me, there is nothing more motivational to an author than being able to HOLD the finished product in your hand, no matter how large or small it is. Notice how thin my “Shut Up and Write” book is in the photo. It should have been bigger, based on the word length, but I made a mistake and used a really small font. But this was okay for a non-fiction publication. However, my latest release “Lights Out at the Moulin Rouge” is a novel, and a thicker book. So are my two other novels that are published on Amazon (“Skipping Childhood” and “Experimenting With Murder“).
Regardless of the genre or size of the book, I say again, print a copy out, at least one for yourself. And when you do, add it to your library, right along with some of your favorite authors so you know it’s in good company. Think about it. What could be more motivational for an author than sitting between Terry McMillian and Stephen King???
4. Share what you know
You can get an endless supply of motivation by sharing what you know and using it to help others. If you haven’t already discovered this as a writer, you will pretty soon, now that you are a published author. This feeling goes way beyond the usual feeling of satisfaction that you get from helping someone.
You will discover that the more you share what you know, the more validated and empowered you feel as an author. Whether the knowledge you impart is contained in the non-fiction books you write, or you happen to be a novelist, but also enjoy sharing what you know about novel writing. Either way, sharing can motivate you and spur you on to be more productive and accomplish that much more.
Case in point, I was wearing my new motivational tee shirt (that you see in the picture) while I was writing a blog post to share with my readers. That is when I came up with the idea for creating the “Wake Me When I’m Famous” Youtube channel. I plan to upload videos I find and also those I create myself. The videos on the channel will all be specifically chosen because they provide helpful information and resources for new Amazon self-published authors. I have no doubt that creating and compiling these videos will serve as an additional source of author motivation!
