Amazon Authors with No Reviews: The Chicken and the Egg Syndrome
Self-published authors like myself often clamor about the difficulty of getting highly-coveted Amazon book reviews. New releases like my One Bad Deed …Leads to Another (A Shocking Suspense Thriller) won’t stand a chance among the thousands of new releases without obtaining some Amazon reviews. To those of you who don’t know better, this may sound a lot easier to achieve than it actually is. To those self-published authors who are in this predicament, you understand that it is a lot like the chicken and the egg syndrome. So, what can you do when:
- Only a few people buy your book because you don’t have book reviews.
- You don’t have book reviews because only a few people have bought your book.
This is a catch-21 situation that we undiscovered authors often find ourselves in. If you’re a new author, you may have thought you were the only one with this problem, especially if you are still able to see some book sales. For example, I currently make small royalties on my existing non-fiction titles, as well as my two novels. But while the books are being sold; securing Amazon reviews is still a problem.
Relying on the FEW
In an ideal world, if we could just rely on the ‘few” people who first buy your book to leave reviews, that would help to start the ball rolling. But that is rarely the case, at least not with general readers you don’t know and didn’t coerce.
Good or bad, most people don’t typically like to be the first one to start things off; think about it.
Long lines with slow service – NOT everyone complains, though they agree with the one or two outspoken ones
An empty dance floor but packed room; no one wants to be the first (or 2, 3, 4, etc), even if you’re a good dancer. Some people wait until the floor is literally packed before deciding to join in. That’s just human nature. So don’t bother second-guessing your writing capabilities, due to a lack of immediate reviews. You will only do yourself an injustice.
Loyal readers can be classified in a number of ways, but all of them are only loyal to a point. Very few will deviate and do something that is out of their comfort zone. When we recognize this point, we accept the fact that NOT all readers leave reviews, even avid readers. I know because I live with 3 of them.
My sister has literally spent more than two or three thousand dollars (easily) on books in the past few years. That includes digital and audio books. Because she is disabled, and mostly housebound, books are her life. Yet, she has NEVER left a book review – not once. In spite of this fact, she is quite loyal to her favorite authors; so much so that she waits for the first opportunity to purchase pre-releases of all their books. But, as already mentioned, she never leaves reviews.
The point is; it may take much more than just a few people buying your book, before you finally get a review or two. But this is no reason to give up, or be down on yourself, especially if you’re still seeing some book sales.
All you can do, is find ways to continue asking people to purchase, read and review your book on Amazon. When you do this enough times; your request will eventually fall upon the right ears and there will be those who will gladly support you with an honest review. You can’t hope for anymore than that.
So, Amazon authors, don’t fret if you happen to have little to no book reviews right now. Just keep promoting your books, and above all, keep writing and releasing new titles like: One Bad Deed …Leads to Another and other great works of fiction.

ABOUT THIS BOOK:
One Bad Deed …Leads to another
A Shocking Suspense Thriller
Have you ever heard a story where someone was having a bad day? In this story, everybody’s having one, in fact, it’s an endless night of crime. When one bad deed leads to another, the result is robbery, assault, and murder. If ever there was such a thing as bad karma, this ironic story of retribution is the perfect example.
The whole thing starts when Jennifer’s plans for a romantic evening with Brian are all shot to hell. She has to go to work, so, Brian goes out to a bar, and ends up meeting Sophia. Sophia’s a hot looking prostitute that seduces him into leaving the bar, and getting a hotel room. But Brian soon finds out that looks can be deceiving. Sophia definitely has plans for him, but no intentions of selling her body. The series of events that occur from that point forward, connect like dots in a twisted game of dominoes. Eventually they all fall down. In a final reveal at the very end, you’ll discover what spun things out of control to begin with.
This shocking suspense thriller has a number of interesting twists. It is an enjoyable short read that quickly climaxes to a surprising conclusion.
